Zebra Mussel Clay – Freshwater Shell Infused Polymer, 2 oz Artisan Clay with Natural Fragments, Kenosha Wisconsin Lake Clay

$15.00

Freshwater invader, reimagined as clay.
This Zebra Mussel Clay blends Sculpey III with fragments of zebra mussel shell foraged along the shores of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Known for their striking striped shells, zebra mussels are an invasive species in the Great Lakes—yet their fragments offer a unique aesthetic when incorporated into clay.

Collected from Lake Michigan’s shoreline, the shells add crisp white and dark brown flecks to the clay, echoing the mussel’s striped patterns. Their presence reflects both the ecological story of invasive species and the beauty of freshwater ecosystems.

When fired, the clay reveals sharp speckles, subtle shimmer, and layered shell textures. Sealed with resin, it develops a polished finish, highlighting the embedded fragments.

Available in 2 oz blocks, perfect for sampling, sculpting, or collecting as part of the coastal and freshwater clay series.

Frequently Asked Questions

Imperfections, Shipment, and Custom Pieces

All pieces are handmade and one-of-a-kind. Pieces may have small imperfections, dimples, and blemishes. I try to be sure blemishes are included in the item’s photographs. Please keep this in mind as you order.

Pottery is fragile, so I package my pots carefully to avoid any items breaking in shipment. Sometimes, this can mean a large amount of shipping material is used. Boxes, shrink wrap, shredded paper, and bubble wrap are recyclable. Packing peanuts are biodegradable. Please recycle/biodegrade if possible!

Custom pieces can take about 4 weeks to create. I avoid delays as much as possible, but the kiln can have a mind of its own. I’ll notify you immediately if I expect any delays in the production process.
