Ancient toolstone reborn as clay.
This Chert Clay blends Sculpey III with fragments of chert collected in the Missouri Ozarks. Chert, a hard silica-rich stone, was historically valued by Indigenous communities for toolmaking and holds a deep geologic and cultural legacy.
The Ozarks are home to abundant chert outcrops, formed from marine deposits over millions of years. These fragments bring rugged textures, earthy reds, greys, and tans, grounding this clay in both geologic history and human heritage.
When fired, the clay reveals sharp speckles, stony inclusions, and natural variation. Sealed with resin, it develops a smooth, glass-like finish that highlights the embedded fragments.
Available in 2 oz blocks, perfect for sampling, sculpting, or adding to a collection of geology-inspired art materials.
