The Wide-Eyed Sentinel is a modern reimagining of the Kurgan stelae — anthropomorphic stone monuments that once dotted the steppes of Eurasia, marking the presence of ancestors and warriors. For centuries, they stood as protectors, their forms weathered but steadfast.
This gargoyle is modeled after a real balbal (Stelae) on Khortytsia Island, Ukraine. This balbal dates back to 1200 AD and was likely carved by the Cuman people.
Sculpted in clay and embedded in Virginia green jasper, this guardian fuses with the earth beneath it, symbolizing centuries of watchful loyalty. His alert expression recalls the eternal vigilance of ancestral protectors, keeping silent watch over the land he guards.

Imperfections, Shipment, and Custom Pieces
All pieces are handmade and one-of-a-kind. Pieces may have small imperfections, dimples, and blemishes. I try to be sure blemishes are included in the item’s photographs. Please keep this in mind as you order.
Pottery is fragile, so I package my pots carefully to avoid any items breaking in shipment. Sometimes, this can mean a large amount of shipping material is used. Boxes, shrink wrap, shredded paper, and bubble wrap are recyclable. Packing peanuts are biodegradable. Please recycle/biodegrade if possible!
Custom pieces can take about 4 weeks to create. I avoid delays as much as possible, but the kiln can have a mind of its own. I’ll notify you immediately if I expect any delays in the production process.
